Tom Chambers, Mark Rothko - Hallowed Ground, 2025, Photography and Pixelization

Client:

Year:

Tom R. Chambers' "Mark Rothko - Hallowed Ground" series is seen to finalize his artist residency at the Rothko Museum, Daugavpils, Latvia. Chambers visited seven different sites in Daugavpils (Rothko's birthplace) where it is believed that Rothko visited, played, and studied as a child. He documented (photographically) those areas, and then converted the documentation at the pixel level to geometric abstraction as a tribute to Rothko. He offers a unique inversion: Rothko blurred edges to reveal the soul, and Chambers, through the sharp clarity of the pixel, reconstructs the soul’s context.
